Tomorrow is the big day, election day! So last night I was reading through the pamphlet that came in the mail that has information on each candidate, and I realized that there are some real winners who are running. They were given 100 words to describe what they stood for and believed in. There were several that I had to read multiple times in order to understand what idea they were trying to get across. Some of the entries were just laughable. Some treated it like a job application where they list their meager qualifications, while others used it to express their opinion that love sets you free and children are wonderful. Others babbled on nonsensically as if spoken and written language was something all together new to them. My point is that I am yet again viewing the elections as a crap shoot in which you can never win but only loose less. What can you do? I mean really, what is there stopping me from running (besides a complete lack of interest). I guess the ability of some common person (and I mean very common) to run for public office is what makes America great. What gets me is the fact that these people are supposed to be representatives, and I shudder to think that the masses are putting some of these people on pedestals. It’s about like entering your stock and rusty 1987 VW Golf in a classic car show. Anyway, before I get on a rant I’d better change the subject. OH! So I’m sitting in church yesterday, staring at the floor and figuring out functions to explain the shapes in the carpeting. Behind us is a young girl, I’m guessing about 1 year to 18 months old. Still in the babbling stages of infancy, and she was just babbling away. So there I sit, dazing from an overload of Calculus homework when it happens. I’d been singing that Taco’s song from Invader Zim all morning, and in her babbling the girl behind us yelled out TACOS!!! I could not stop laughing! I chuckled through most of the next several talks. This was only topped when, while waiting for Nikki outside of the Relief Society room, a group of young women walked up to the door and said (not so quietly) “Why does it take the OLD LADIES so long to get out?” This was funny to me as well, especially considering that Nikki just turned 25. Yup 25, the half way to 50 mark! I’ve decided life is much more interesting when you get all the inside jokes (some of which are so inside that the people making the jokes aren’t aware of it). Now that the hunts are over, it’s time for me to get back on track with some of my projects. This is, of course, after catching up on my homework and preparing the garage for the upcoming event. I have decided that my truck has been ugly long enough and it’s time for a face lift, or at least some makeup. I’ll be preparing my truck for paint over the next 2 months. I have between December 7th (65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, also the last day of classes) and January 1st to get the truck repaired, prepped, and primed. I have all the equipment to do the priming myself and will be doing such. I also have the equipment to do the painting as well and will most likely, after a bit of practice, be shooting the paint myself. I will likely be posting pictures of my progress as I go through everything, because I know you’re all so interested. Well, until next week, keep your stick on the ice!

Gimme Gimme some of them TACOS!!!! And as far as the Old Ladies comment, I'm gonna let it slide, because I do believe that I am the very youngest member of my relief society. :P
Time to get on my political soapbox. The afternoon before the election is not the best time to decide who you are going to vote for. Then using a 100 word snippet out of a pamphlet doesn't help much either. It only took you 620 words to convey your message. Try to express your frustration in the electoral process in 100 words or less. I don't mind when people don't vote. In fact I think an uninformed vote is a bad thing. I do think if you don't vote or vote uninformed you have no room to complain about our ** government officials later.
Most candidates have given speeches , talked on the radio, and put up websites detailing what they want to do when elected. That being said I don’t think voting for a party is the best thing to do. Sometimes the best person for the job is of the “wrong” party. Sometimes you have to vote for someone even when they do some boneheaded things. Case in point, I will be voting for Senator Hatch. Despite a few shortcomings I think he has done an excellent job representing me in Washington.
** 100 Word Mark.
PS 25 might be a 1/4 century but no matter how old Nikki gets I will always be older.
Some of you have heard this already, but for those of you who haven't here goes. Some of us were talking the other night and decided that there should be a "None of the above" option on ballots. If none of the above wins the race, then a new race with completely different candidates will be held. :D
In response to Archeious’ first post, I agree that an uninformed vote is useless. I would also like to defend Shawn and myself by saying that while we have not had the time to watch every political debate and interview we have spent a good amount of time on the internet researching the different candidates to find out what their views are on the issues that are important to us. While we don’t know what every candidate has said about every issue, we do have a pretty good idea of who we will be voting for and why.

I realize that I'm being Monday quarterback this morning, but I'm still of the opinion that politics is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario. Case in point: control of congress and the house. If the Republicans maintain control that will continue to do what they've done over the past couple of years: absolutely nothing. If the Democrats seize control, we're already starting to see the effects from that in the global market the value of the U.S. dollar has dropped 1% in major markets (when faced with the Euro and the Yen) which doesn't sound like much but it actually is for one days trading.
You can even see it with the opinion vote about commuter rail and UTA that happened in election around here. It wasn't an actual vote, it was opinion vote. Even though it won, there is no evidence that it will make commuter rail come to Utah County any faster than it was originally planned. A representative interviewed about the opinion vote basically said that this will help it come to Utah County in 2009 or 2010. The problem lies in that with that kind of projected date it usually has about a 6-month to a year delay or some kind of problem resolution. With the original date they had planned to put commuter rail being 2011, seems like that vote really accomplished very little.
BUT on the plus side, that Leslie Lewis Judge that you sent me a video about got booted. Silver lining.
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. Right before posted I had spoken to someone who was only voting because they would get extra credit in one of their classes. She said, and I quote "I don't know who I voted for I just voted straight party". Most people take politics too seriously. By that I mean they say it is impossible to know every canidate and every issue and they don't vote. I think everyone should make a good faith attempt to understand the intent of the proposition of the morals of canidiate.
I voted for Pete Ashdown because I think he would honestly try to help Utahans. Just remember we don't live in a democracy...whaaat did I jsut say. Yeah we live in a representive republic. You elect someone who then represents you and your state in a union of states. As the scriptures says if we elect righteous people we will prosper if we elect evil people we fall.
