Now what?

We hear about all kinds of countries, mostly communist or socialist, censoring the media so that the people of the country only hear what the government want them to hear. In some cases this isn’t necessary because our own biases will edit what we don’t want to hear for us. I have often wondered what the world thinks of our “adventures” in Iraq. I know this is a huge can of worms and everyone had a different opinion, but the point remains that it is a problem. Our leader and president acted based on the information he was presented with and this is where we are. Point the finger all you want, but the problem still remains. How do we improve the situation so that we can bring our friends and neighbors home? Anyway, in my search for understanding, I have been looking at world wide news agencies, particularly BBC news. I have found a worldwide resentment toward the American people. I can understand their views as well. Mostly, I see that is seems difficult to separate the interests of those in power with the interests of the general populous. I heard this morning that the Presidents percentage of popularity has dropped in to the 20’s. They just see us losing in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now attacking in Somalia. To some, not just Islam extremists but normal people in several countries, we are the terrorists. We are losing global popularity and it is no longer safe for me and others to call themselves Americans in an increasing number of countries. Tomorrow we’ll hear about what Bush plans to do about this terrible situation we find ourselves in. I wonder what he’ll come up with and if any of it will actually happen. I can’t help but feel manipulated by yet another wordsmithing politician. Soon, our congress will meet for the first time and try to make sense of the situation. What will happen I wonder? Is this the start of the fall of the greatest country in the world? Time will tell. In the meantime, it may be pertinent to proclaim yourself as Canadian if you should find yourself suddenly in another country.

Doesn't sound very uplifting. I won't get involved in the rights or wrongs. I find it amazing how powerful the press is and more to the point why they feel they need to tear down everything. I personally know a solider in Iraq. He is serving as guard in a detainee facility. Recently he and his "camp" were compared to the nazi guards and the concentration camps. I know this man personally and know he couldn't do anything even remotely approaching what happened at nazi concentration camps. Yet that is how the world wide press is protraying it. We helped, as part of a UN excerise attack terrorist ini Somalia along with the Somalia and Etheopian goverments. Yet we get portrayed as the bad guys. We are in a war and we are lossing it in the press. I have mentioned this a few times to Code Weaver but some of you may not know but I have been a member of the Department of Defense press corp for teh last couple of years. We occassionally hear about the good stuff and always hear about the bad stuff. When was the last time you heard about the thouasands of schools being built or the improved infrastructure (power and water) no because it isn't good news. Only deaths make good news.

Sadly, Too True. I also know several soldiers, and they are all happy and proud to serve their country. I do wish that the media showed some of the good, instead of all negative. My personal oppinon, for anyone who cares, is that I think Bush is doing the best he can. I think he is trying, but events have not gone as he forsaw them to. While a world without war is not possible, I agree with Maximus that we need to find a way to bring the soldiers back home to their families. It will be interesting to hear what the new 'plan' is...

I did a double checked Bush's approval rating and they are in the 30's where they have been for months. Just FYI: http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm

Hello me again. The USA Today gallop poll on Bush's "favorability" shows 45% favorability. When asked "We'd like to get your overall opinion of some people in the news. As I read each name, please say if you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of these people -- or if you have never heard of them. How about George W. Bush."

Just goes to show you how messed up the press is.

Well, I'm just about as uninformed as a person can get, but here's what I think: I agree with Nikkinator. Bush is doing the best he can. Other than that, I'm not educated enough on the situation to comment...Regardless of what he's been up to lately, especially with this war, if he's doing way too much or not enough, I'm of the opinion that he's our president and should be supported and held in some measure of respect. And that's about all I can say without further research.
